Sustainable Small Art Studio

One value that is most important to me is to not just care for the Earth, but to regenerate it where I can. Not only to stop doing harm, but to actually repair some of the damage caused in the past. I have some standards I’m able to follow today and some I’m striving towards in the future.

What does sustainability look like for a small home art studio?

Shipping and Packaging

Shipping and packaging materials are completely recycled, recyclable, and/or compostable. When something arrives, know that all the little pieces that kept it safe are also safe for the Earth.

Outer packaging: Recyclable cardboard mailers, tubes, and paper tape

Inner packaging: Compostable waterproof sealed bag, recyclable paper wrapping, compostable clear tape, and sometimes I’m even able to include biodegradable silk ribbon (that’s already been recycled once!). If an item comes with a plastic waterproof bag, it is probably being reused from other packing I received, and is able to be recycled at store-drop off locations.

Art Products

All creations are made with biodegradable or recyclable papers, although, I hope you’ll keep it so long you don’t have worry about it’s end-life. All products are archival quality, which the art-world classifies as lasting 300 years or longer.

Paper: Originals, prints, and greeting cards are all created on 100% cotton rag. Totally natural and will biodegrade if the time ever comes.

Paints: All of my paint is non-toxic, but currently only about 25% are earth based pigments. As I use up older paints, I’ll replace them with earth-based pigments. I have a few small suppliers who are able to make every pigment I can image, all with nature. I’m excited to be able to continue supporting them in the future!

Varnish: That darn varnish – Currently researching ways to keep your paintings safe with a more earth-friendly option.

Personally

In all the other parts of my life, I strive to live in harmony with nature. Things like letting leaves be mulch instead of leafblowing them away, keeping our family low-waste, growing some of our own food, creating pollinator gardens, and even starting the process of creating a regenerative farm. We have switched our home to 100% clean, renewable energy sources. Know that by supporting my small art studio, you’re supporting all of these small and large ways that I am working to repair the Earth.
